The “American Dream”

The social expectations for dogs has always been harder. When a person decides to adopt a dog their expectation is that they are getting a new best friend. After all dogs are “man’s best friend.” However, many would be dog owners forget that a natural part of having a best friend is the fact that this best friend is a person. One day the two of you spend every second together and the next you are arguing who is a partly cloudy patriot and who is not. This narrative is exhibited in Nicole Dennis-Benn’s work “Swimmer.” In this work Dennis-Benn narrates her story of the expectations that were had of her being an immigrant. Specifically, the fact that she went to Cornell University but decided to take the creative writing path instead of pursuing medicine. This idea is exemplified when Nicole Dennis-Benn says, “I later blurted to the small group of three… “English,” I replied. With a creative writing minor. They fell silent.” This quote sums up the experience that many disadvantaged p...

Weird Pop Culture

Something has infected all humans on Earth. I don’t know what it is, but I know that it is something. Way back when I was a puppy, everyone talked about a strange kind of beer that somehow infected the whole world and made people wear masks. I'm not sure what that was, but I know they discussed it extensively. It was like this was their whole world. They would also talk about how they needed more of the green rectangles that I love eating. That is understandable. Everyone should be able to take their anger out on that weird man on the chewable rectangles. But as I have said, this world is different now. Now they talk about this weird thing they call 6-7 and do this weird hand motion. When they make the hand motion, I get super excited and think that we get to go on a walk! But then of course, nothing happens. They also talk about how all of this Ice is going to come and take people back to where they were born. Normally, ice is a fun thing that only happens when the big fat man in ...

A Trip to The Tyne Cot Memorial at Passchendaele

Today was a very weird day. I woke up in my doggy bed, and it was still dark outside. It is never dark outside when I wake up! The weird humans who live in MY house kept talking about this thing called the Tyne Cot Memorial. I don't even think twice about this. These humans are being cruel to me because they don’t even let me drink water. How am I supposed to live? They shove me into the car for what feels like an eternity before I can get out to stretch my legs. Just as I am about to relax, a really loud and giant bird flies over my head with the word delta on its belly. What is this place? Is that bird going to eat me? The next eight hours involve me being eaten by the bird and then spit out in a completely different place.  Then, I am again shoved in a car, but this one is different and smells weird. When I am finally let out, I see almost twelve thousand graves. I just sit there. I have no idea what this is, but it feels sacred. At the back of the lot, I see four archways with ...
