Weird Pop Culture

Something has infected all humans on Earth. I don’t know what it is, but I know that it is something. Way back when I was a puppy, everyone talked about a strange kind of beer that somehow infected the whole world and made people wear masks. I'm not sure what that was, but I know they discussed it extensively. It was like this was their whole world. They would also talk about how they needed more of the green rectangles that I love eating. That is understandable. Everyone should be able to take their anger out on that weird man on the chewable rectangles. But as I have said, this world is different now. Now they talk about this weird thing they call 6-7 and do this weird hand motion. When they make the hand motion, I get super excited and think that we get to go on a walk! But then of course, nothing happens. They also talk about how all of this Ice is going to come and take people back to where they were born. Normally, ice is a fun thing that only happens when the big fat man in the red soda suit comes along, but now it is supposedly everywhere. I don’t see any ice, which is making me mad. Also, these people who live in my house have gone insane. They used to be normal, but now they talk to their black rectangle. Their rectangles talk back!! And it is not another person! I have many theories about what it might be, but I think it has something to do with all the movies where these pieces of metal come along and take over human civilization. Please let me know if you know what is wrong with these people!

Response to “There is No Unmarked Women”

I disagree with the notion Deborah Tannen put forth in the short essay “There is No Unmarked Woman” that women tend to be more marked than men. The only difference is the way that men and women tend to be marked. As Tannen described, women tend to be more focused on the physical aspects of being marked. Tannen describes herself closely inspecting other women at a conference that she went to. This demonstrates that women tend to value the physical more than men, but that does not mean that men are marked any less. For example, take collage and professional sports. Men overwhelmingly mark themselves as a fan of certain sports franchises. However, this is slightly harder to spot than the clothes and makeup that women tend to wear which leads to the perception that women are more marked than men. A Rough Life

The United States has always been a place that “welcomes” immigrants however, that does not means that immigrants have always had an easy time adjusting to their new lives in America. In the book “The Best We Could Do”, Thi Bui describes her rough life in America particularly because her parents struggle to fit in with American culture or rather American culture does not easily allow immigrants from a war torn country to become successful. This can be seen on page sixty seven when a young boy spits on Thi’s father and calls him a “gook”. Thi Bui’s situation is not helped by the fact that her father is a grieving man dealing with trauma that few can imagine. But, even with all of this against her Thi is still able to live a pretty successful Life and become a national bestselling author.
