Social Media is Pulling a Gatsby

Luckily, my dog nose is very good at differentiating between different people. However, this does not allow me to see into their past. Many people, such as Jay Gatsby or rather James Gatz, personify this narrative. James Gatz started life as the son of unsuccessful farmers in the middle of nowhere in North Dakota, before moving to the Great Lakes area and ultimately meeting Dan Cody, who would help accelerate his rise to wealth, along with his love for Daisy. This change required James Gatz to leave everything behind to try to pursue his dreams. While at first it does not seem that his life represents the American dream, and in many ways it does not, Gatsby still had to struggle to earn his money. Gatsby still spent years of his life on Dan Cody’s boat. Gatsby still spent years as a salmon fisherman in the Great Lakes. Gatsby still went overseas and fought in World War I. Many people in the modern world seem to believe that The Great Gatsby is outdated; however, these same storylines play out in modern society. The twenty-first century has seen the rise of the social media influencer. Most of them come from relatively humble backgrounds, and after a few years of hard work, everything fell perfectly into place. By the time they are twenty-five years old, they are living in a mansion near a big city, yet many people who are not part of the social media sphere wonder where they got their money from. Most of these influencers make creative names that they go by, such as MrBeast. They leave their old life behind in favor of living in high society and the promises that it brings. This is the same as what Gatsby follows. Modern society is simply playing out the narrative of Gatsby. However, one could argue that this is not a new concept. This has been going on since before the days of Joan of Arc, and through some new medium, it will continue well into the future. However, the latest way that people have been pulling a Gatsby is through social media. Hopefully, my nose will keep working and I will be alright in this world.

  1. the only difference between James Gatz and a 25-year-old content creator is the medium. The pursuit of self-made wealth and high society means the American Dream has now just became the American Feed.

  2. I like how you connected Gatsby’s reinvention to modern influencers, it makes the story feel current and alive. The comparison to people creating new identities online is spot on, and the ending line about your “nose” adds a nice personal touch.
