Midwest vs Northeast
About a year ago I was on vacation with my family in Florida and we were at a restaurant. When we went to order I said to the waiter, “can please have this”? After this my dad gave me a funny look and something along the lines of “why do you not just tell the waiter what you actual” after this we went down the rabbit hole about differences between Midwest verse northeast mannerisms. The Midwest tends to have the stereotype that everyone is very nice to each other with constant apologizing and small talk. However, in the northeast the stereotype is that they tend to be blunter with less care for how other people view them. The reason that many midwesterners tend to have the mannerisms that they have is due to their roots. Many people in this region are from German and Scandinavian ancestry who were fleeing political turmoil and were driven by the promise of cheap land. Many of these immigrants depended heavily on each other which formed a strong sense of community in these places. This led to everyone being kind to each other as a way to survive the hardships of moving to a different country presents. The northeast is completely different. While the Midwest is primarily comprised of people from just a couple of places the northwest is the the same. The people there tend to be much more diverse as there are people from places like Germany, Scandinavia, Poland, Italy, Ireland, other European countries, native Americans, and African Americans as well as others from all over the world. Because of this and because many of these people didn’t have the same cultural similarities that so many of the people in the Midwest had, people started to mind their own business more often and be very blunt when they interact with each other. However, in the modern world where people tend to move around more and more, I have a feeling that these trends will start to become less and less. The distinct lines that used to separate the Midwest from the northeast and other borders that separate regions with cultural differences are beginning to fade. In the future, they may not even exist at all.
I like how you connected regional behavior to historical immigrant patterns. It was interesting to read about based on location, it can affect certain mannerisms.
ReplyDeleteI think this is very interesting because I never really thought about the differences in mannerisms across different regions. I like how you broke down WHY they act this way, connecting it to the differences in individual's culture in the north and the togetherness in the mid-west.
